'An item bank is, typically, a large collection of test items which have been classified and stored in a database so that at a later date, they can be selected for use in new tests. The items are all classified according to certain descriptive characteristics such as the topic of a text, the testing point for an item, etc., as well as statistical information about how difficult each item is. It is important that all of the item difficulties have been located on a common scale of difficulty so that any combination of items can be put into a new test and the item difficulties added together to give a precise measure of the difficulty of that test. "An item bank is a set of pretested items or tasks which have been calibrated according to characteristics such as person ability, item difficulty and powers of discrimination, and stored in a central file for use when needed. When test constructors are devising a new version of a test, they can select from the bank items which will not only be of a suitable level for the test population, but will also, when assembled together, combine to form a test which is equivalent in difficulty and discrimination to previous tests in the series". Η τράπεζα θεμάτων αποτελείται συνήθως από μια μεγάλη συλλογή θεμάτων για εξετάσεις, τα οποία κατηγοριοποιούνται και αποθηκεύονται σε μια βάση δεδομένων, ώστε να μπορούν να χρησιμοποιηθούν στο μέλλον σε νέες δοκιμασίες. Τα θέματα κατηγοριοποιούνται σύμφωνα με συγκεκριμένα περιγραφικά χαρακτηριστικά, όπως το θέμα ενός κειμένου, το εξεταζόμενο σημείο σε ένα ερώτημα κτλ. και σύμφωνα με στατιστικά δεδομένα σχετικά με το βαθμό δυσκολίας του κάθε θέματος. Είναι σημαντικό όλες οι δυσκολίες ενός ερωτήματος να αξιοποιούνται σύμφωνα με μια κοινή κλίμακα δυσκολίας, ώστε οποιοσδήποτε συνδυασμός ερωτημάτων που επιλέγονται για μια νέα εξέταση και συνολικά όλες οι δυσκολίες ενός θέματος να προσφέρουν ένα ακριβές μέτρο εκτίμησης της δυσκολίας της δεδομένης εξέτασης.
